The story about how the Amazon Last Mile team built their first Android delivery app that runs on top of Android Automotive OS (AAOS) in the head unit of the custom built electric delivery van. The in-vehicle delivery app compliments our flagship delivery app on mobile for while driving use cases and leverages multi-screen environment, vehicle signals to prioritize core driver needs like instant access to the delivery information and GPS navigation to reduce number of interactions with the system while being up to date with the latest delivery workflow. In the first part of the talk, we will discuss why we decided to build the in-vehicle app and major architectural decisions. In the second part, we will share challenges we faced with multi-screen UI development, state synchronization between our mobile and vehicle apps, vehicle systems integration and login experience.
